About Us

For the Love of Cats, Inc. is an organization dedicated to saving the lives of cats and kittens in our community. We are a no kill, all volunteer shelter and rescue group operating through the generous donations of the community members.

Our mission is to rescue the kittens found on the island and TNR the adults. Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is a full management plan in which stray and feral cats already living outdoors are humanely trapped, vaccinated, and sterilized. Kittens and tame cats are adopted into good homes. Healthy adult cats too wild to be adopted are returned to their familiar habitat under the lifelong care of volunteers.

Every kitten and cat brought to the shelter receives the best medical care thanks to the support of local veterinarians. Volunteers visit daily to work, love and play with them to assess their individual personalities so we know what makes each one so special. Our goal is to match every special orphan we take care of to the right family for a permanent home full of love.

Since our beginning in 2002 to the end of 2008, we have rescued and adopted over 1200 cats and kittens and sterilized over 800 adults.

We were recently honored with prestigious Walter Turken Award for animal welfare by the Naples Humane Society for the work we have done. We share this award with all our hard working volunteers and all those who have helped us help so many felines through the years.

Cats in Island History

Cats have always been on Marco island, it seems. The Calusa Indians even made a deity statue dedicated to the cat. The Indians ate primarily seafood and especially oysters which is why the tallest part of Marco Island is a giant shell mound. You can imagine how bad the rats and vermin would have been around the shell mound if not for the cats. Today, they are a valuable part of our community and play an important part in the natural pest control on the island. Most of the stray cats on the island are someone’s pet or offspring that have been abandoned here.
